Witty Jabs Become Part Of The Case

After the conclusion of yet another tiring week, the principals in a huge cover up trial spend their various weekends very differently. The Jurors take a long bus ride; the lawyers return to work, and one individual goes back to prison.

As he prepared to bring to a close the days proceedings, District Judge, in a very calculated move, nearly runs to escape the courtroom. He doesn't want to hear any more questions. It was a welcome sight to the accused eyes. After tonelessly responding to what seemed like a thousand questions with no emotion whatsoever, he appeared thoroughly worn out. The marshals are waiting patiently to take him back to his correctional facility. He's currently serving a one to four-year sentence for his choice to obstruct justice.

The judge bid the jury a good weekend. He instructed them to relax, take some time off and enjoy their bus ride. The sequestered jury has been living in a motel. They will probably be taken out this weekend for a picnic and some time spent away from the hotel. The judge did not have similarly pleasant things to say to the attorneys who were still displaying great hostility to one another and to the judge, despite being told to stop.

He has confessed his wrongdoing in covering up the case. In my opinion, this means all of you have done a great job. He went on to say, "It's now up to the jury whether or not to believe what he's admitted to." At the conclusion of a recess, he states his concern about the jury being influenced by the court.

While the jury remained impassive, the defendant retold the same intensely detailed narrative of the cover up that he had testified to at the televised committee hearings. There were a few inconsistencies concerning the relevant timeline. But it wasn't the testimony that was spell binding. It was the contention among the judge and attorneys that captivated the audience. They were rewarded for their three hour wait.

When the jury and accused had left the room, the lawyers got into a heated argument because the government had failed to let them know who would be after the next witness. Having never promised to give more than a day's notice, the chief prosecutor replied that he didn't know the name of the individual who was supposed to testify next. One argued he couldn't see why they objected to giving the witness name, and stopping another silly argument.

A compromise was sought by the district attorney once again. For the record, I think the prosecution is all wet when it comes to their approach on this case. Materials have been withheld for long periods of time. To make our cross examinations less potent, they keep witness names from us. Their claim that their testimony could be found on the back of a matchbook hardly makes sense when you realize we've provided them with thousands of pages of printed testimony. Laughter filled the courtroom when the district attorney sighed and said they'd been getting along pretty well until then. At that point, the judge was standing, clearly ready to depart, stating that he is already overly burdened trying to keep the attorneys in check.
