It's been very well known of some threats of Identity Theft that exist today. However, the sad part of it all is that we don't know all of the identity scams that are out there. Now the trend of identity fraud is starting to target one of the biggest social medias around, who I myself love to use, and it's called Facebook. The problem there is that many hackers are now starting to create fake accounts in other people's names and using your friends list to steal money.

How Can Thieves Pull This Off


There are several different ways that an identity thief can create a fake Facebook account, but the main way is through hacking your email first. You can actually download a worm or virus without even noticing, and on the other end of that worm is a hacker who can monitor your keystrokes. Once they have your email information they can literally go into your computer and steal a picture of you. They use that picture and your email to create a fraudulent Facebook account.

Once they have a Facebook page up and running in your name, they then will you use all your contacts to start sending messages and posts. Those pretending to be you is not the worst part. They actually start making up fake stories and posting to your friends that you are in another country traveling and that you were robbed at gun point, or some other disaster. They then begin to start asking your friends for help, and by help I mean Money. Your friends and family have no idea it's not you, so they begin wiring money, and usually to overseas accounts

How To Stop It From Happening To You

The truth is that there is no way to stop it from happening. But a few things that you can begin doing to start minimizing the risk is to:

1. Make sure to change your password regularly. Even though changing your password regularly might seem like a hassle, it's always be much more less than a hassle compared to being a victim of Identity Theft.

2. Have some type of Anti-Virus program on all of your computer systems, including your cell phone. There are a few apps out there that the android market offers for free to keep your phone from getting viruses and worms. Though an Anti-Virus is not 100% guaranteed, it does keep majority of the items that can give access to hackers out. Therefore, keeping your personal information a bit more secure

3. Never give out your personal information. There are some exceptions to this rule. It's okay to sign up for free reports, or submit your information to certain web-sites for access. Many web-sites won't let you have access until you fill out some short form asking for some details anyway. Those details however should be limited to Name, Email, and Phone Number. If you are ever asked for other personal details, the most important thing to do is to read their privacy policy.

In Conclusion...

You don't need to have a Facebook to become a victim of Identity Theft. In fact, pretend for a second that the tables were the other way around. It's your family member asking for help. How will you know if it is them or not? Those are some of the threats we face today with Identity Theft. The only way to start catching these criminals off guard is by learning how to protect yourself against these attacks. Keep in mind that Facebook is not the social media around, nor is it the only way to have your identity stolen.
