An election for the Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Department 3 position is getting competitive. 58 year old Lary Lamoreux, and 48 year old Janiece Marshall, both attorneys from the Las Vegas area, are challenging incumbent Tony Abbatangelo. As the election draws near, the race to unseat the 17 year incumbent is starting to get very heated.

While felony cases end up in District Court, some of the bail hearings, arraignments and other preliminary hearings go in front of a Justice of the Peace. Furthermore, small claims and misdemeanor cases can also be handled to conclusion by Justices of the Peace.


In 2009, Tony Abbatangelo was involved in an incident which is now affecting the election. He pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor battery domestic violence. As a result, he was forced to attend domestic violence counseling and perform community service for six months.

Tony Abbatangelo's critics have cited one of his recent bail decisions as a sign that he should be voted off the bench. He granted bail to an attempted murder defendant in the amount of $7500. All is not lost for Tony Abbatangelo. He can cite a very good rating in the Judicial Performance Evaluation survey as a strength to his candidacy. In addition to 17 years as a Justice of the Peace, the incumbent also enjoys the advantage of having raised the most campaign funds. Nobody can say for certain how the June 8th Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Department 3 election will turn out, but everyone is sure it will be a hard fought endeavor for all involved.
